"Absolutely shocking": Foster slams Tottenham as pressure mounts on Thomas Frank
Former Socceroo Craig Foster has slammed the current form of the Tottenham Hotspurs after they crashed out of the FA Cup at the earliest possible time.
Pressure is mounting on Spurs’ coach Thomas Frank, who succeeded Ange Postecoglou, as the club sit in 14th on the Premier League and lost 2-1 to Aston Villa to be knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday.
While Frank inherited problems with the Spurs roster after his move from Brentford, the poor performances have many questioning how long the manager has left in his position.
Opposite to this, Brentford, under new manager Keith Andrews, sit in fifth, six points clear of Tottenham.
Foster was heavily critical of Frank on SEN 1170 Mornings, believing poor coaching is preventing Tottenham from solving any of their problems.
“I reckon Tottenham fans would swap right now. Keith Andrews is doing a fantastic job with very meagre means and squad, and you've got Thomas Frank who's just an absolute mess,” Foster said.
“He's one of the worst points per game of any Spurs coach in the last 30 years.
“They're actually not that far off even 4th spot… two wins and all of a sudden (they’re in fourth) because the league this season… but you can't see two wins coming, the way that they're playing.
“(They’re) sitting 14th, so they're on 27 (points), and Newcastle are in 6th, they're only on 32 (points) so you're only talking about six points from 5th.
“They're not a huge way off, but what the Spurs fans are really incensed about is the way they're playing.
“I mean, Spurs are just absolutely shocking.
“They went down 2-0 against Villa, and then they decided to play, right? The second half they were pretty excellent… but teams are always a concern when they start playing when the game is gone.
“That's not coaching, that's not top-class management. The top teams start playing from the beginning of the game and when the game is at risk.
“It's very easy for players when you're 2-0 down to all of a sudden switch into Jogo Bonito and become Vini Junior. Anyone who plays park football knows that because there's no pressure anymore so that's the concern for Spurs fans.
“Thomas Frank can't get them playing like that consistently every game, which is what you have to do to become a top team.”
Tottenham’s next two matches are against West Ham and Burnley, who are both battling to avoid relegation.
A loss to either side could be the nail in the coffin for Frank’s time at the Spurs, despite only being appointed manager less than 200 days ago.
