Colin McNiff's Sunday racing preview at Devonport (03/05)
Punters unsure about finding a winner with racing returning to Devonport for the first time since March could do worse than follow the Adam Trinder stable on Sunday.
Trinder has been on fire recently with nine winners from his past 17 runners in Launceston and Hobart, and that looks certain to continue. Trinder has a better strike rate in Devonport than he does at the other tracks.
On the synthetic this season, Trinder has a winning rate of 21%, and his horses place at 42%. He has nine runners on Sunday, most of whom look to have strong winning chances.
“Khaleesi’s Dream (1350m maiden), she looks the banker for the meeting for us. She looked to have the race won last week and just got it wrong, wasn’t able to put the race away,” Trinder said.
“She comes to Devonport, a familiar environment, and she can take confidence into the race over 1350m, in which her mother (Dothraki Princess) holds the track record, so hopefully the apple hasn’t fallen too far from the tree.”
Trinder is also confident Ilovethistown (BM60 1350m) and Lady Galadriel (BM72 1150m) will both run well.
“Ilovethistown could be the key to ours. (Roundle Park will also contest this race). Beaten by a small margin last time, has worked really well on the synthetic, has trialled well on the synthetic, so I expect him to come here in low grade and make amends.
“Lady Galadriel drawn one, you would think they would go quick. Thoros of Myr should control, went too slow last time., but doesn’t get enough weight concession here, so Lady Galadriel is the key. She’s probably got the measure of most of the field, and I think she is a genuine winning chance.”
Six of Trinder’s starters will be ridden by the state’s number one jockey, Erica Byrne Burke, who sits atop the premiership table with 71 wins. 30 of those wins have been trained by Trinder, and the pair has a 24% winning strike rate this season.
Byrne Burke, who needs to average a little more than two winners per meeting to crack 100 winners for the season, has a ride in each of the eight races. She, too, has been in hot form with 11 winners from her past 26 rides.
After a lay-off, Devonport form can sometimes be tricky, but it should get easier. The northwest club will host seven of the final 13 meetings this season between now and the end of July.
In-form apprentice Jabez Johnstone returns to Tasmania full of confidence after scoring his first metropolitan winner for the Ciaron Maher stable at Caulfield last Wednesday.
Johnstone spent three days with the stable and is likely to return for another stint in the next few weeks.
