Christchurch’s Economic Development Agency has officially released a statement that it has submitted a bid to host a future round of the Supercars Championship.
Their statement mentions the Canterbury Car Club, suggesting any future event in the Christchurch area would likely be held at Ruapuna Motorsport Park, which is owned and operated by the club.
"Christchurch has submitted a bid to host the Supercars Championship and we look forward to hearing official notice from Supercars on their preferred venue," the statement reads.
"Along with the Canterbury Car Club, we hope for a positive outcome to be announced in the near future."
Supercars Australia have confirmed conversations are ongoing and that there is an appetite for a potential second event in the country from both fans and stakeholders.
"New Zealand boasts a passionate motorsport following, highlighted by the support for this week’s second running of the ITM Taupō Super 440.
"There’s clear enthusiasm from fans and stakeholders around the idea of a second event in Aotearoa.
"While those conversations remain ongoing, we will continue to explore what opportunities are available to us."
The development comes as preparations come to a head for Supercars racing at Taupō, with two practice sessions on Friday and three races scheduled across the weekend. Five Kiwi drivers will be in action this weekend, including Andre Heimgartner - who won Race 1 at Taupō in 2024 - and Matt Payne, who is currently sixth in this year’s Championships.

The Taupō Supercars event is currently contracted through 2026.
