“Chips in”: Why form analyst is so keen on defending Winterbottom champion
2023 Winterbottom Stakes winner Overpass is in the box seat to replicate his heroics this Saturday in the Group 1, according to leading form analyst Anthony Jupp.
In his three trips to Western Australia, Bjorn Baker’s horse is yet to taste defeat, saluting in The Quokka twice as well as the aforementioned Winterbottom.
The gelding had its last start in the fiercely competitive Champions Sprint at Flemington earlier this month where he finished eighth of 12 despite being a mere 3.37 lengths off the eventual winner Sunshine In Paris.

Jupp thinks his failure to finish off last start can be forgiven upon his return to Ascot, where he will look to become the first horse since Buffering (2013, 2015) to win the race twice and the first since Hardrada (2002, 2003) to go back-to-back.
He also believes jockey Josh Parr and Overpass can offset the wide draw of barrier 16 and is “chips in” on the six-year-old.
“All (barrier 16) means is that you’ll get a better price… if there’s any sting out, even better,” Jupp told SENTrack’s Star Sports Happy Hour.
“If he’d have drawn barrier 4 or 5 he’s probably a $2.30 or $2.40 chance. You’re getting $3.10 because he’s drawn 16.
“The wider the gate, the better the price. Chips in.”
The main rivals to Overpass, who is the $2.90 favourite with Sportsbet, are local chance Western Empire ($4.80) and James McDonald’s ride Lady Laguna ($4.80), who is the only other horse to come out of the Champions Sprint.
The race will be run at 7:52pm AEDT (4:52pm AWST) this Saturday, November 30 at Ascot.
