Why Buckaroo could miss the Caulfield Cup
Buckaroo’s connections will target the Cox Plate if he runs well at Caulfield this weekend.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding was only narrowly beaten by star import Sir Delius in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield a few weeks back which gives majority owner Ozzie Kheir plenty of hope that he can match up.
Sir Delius then went out and beat a crack Turnbull Stakes field last weekend, including reigning Cox Plate champion Via Sistina.
Many have felt that Buckaroo will head towards the Caulfield Cup, in which he ran second last year, but Australia’s premier weight-for-age race at Moonee Valley could instead be on the agenda.
That all depends on how well he runs in the Might And Power over 2000m at Caulfield on Saturday.
“After Saturday it made us realise that Buckaroo is not far off them,” Kheir said on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“Sir Delius was great in the Underwood and we weren’t far off Sir Delius. With a bit more luck we could have been (closer).
“We were beaten maybe a head or a half length to Sir Delius so you’ve got to say after him winning the Turnbull that we’re right in it.
“We’re probably leaning towards a Cox Plate but that will be dependent on how he runs on Saturday. If he looks like he needs further then we’ll back him up into the Caulfield Cup.
“Saturday will be the determining factor for us.”
Buckaroo is currently the $7 second favourite with Sportsbet for the Caulfield Cup on October 18.
He is a $15 chance for the Cox Plate on October 25.
The son of Fastnet Rock will likely head up a small field in the Might And Power against the likes of Treasurethe Moment and Globe.
