Cameron Murray and Latrell Mitchell sent for scans in horror South Sydney training session
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have been dealt a massive double blow with senior leaders Cameron Murray and Latrell Mitchell both suffering significant injuries during a training session on Wednesday.
South Sydney have confirmed that Murray has sustained a suspected ruptured achilles tendon and has been sent for further scans. The club believes he will not play in the coming months.
Murray had recently returned to training following surgery on his wrist in late 2024. The 27-year-old was representing Australia during the Pacific Championship when the injury occurred.
Mitchell reported a hamstring complaint during the session and was also sent for scans to determine the full extent of the injury. The fullback was named to start in the Rabbitohs’ Charity Shield clash against the St George Illawarra Dragons on Saturday in Mudgee but has since been ruled out.
“After about 10 am Wednesday morning, Cameron Murray went down with no contact involved and the theory is a suspected ruptured achilles tendon,” The Sydney Morning Herald’s Dan Walsh told SEN 1170.
“We are talking months on the sidelines for the South Sydney skipper. It’s a brutal blow for coach Wayne Bennett.
“It wasn’t a contact session but immediately the trainers, medical staff and Cam were fearing the worst.
"It’s one of those injuries that are similar to an ACL. Once those suspicions are there, it tends to be true.
“Cam is looking at around five to nine months which is the general time frame.
“Saturday was going to be our first look at Latrell (and) he’s been looking fantastic on the training paddock. He has apparently twinged a hamstring and we are awaiting scans.
“The Bunnies’ first game is against the Dolphins in (around) two weeks. If it’s his left leg, it’s the hamstring that has given him issues in the past.
“He has torn tendons in that hamstring and missed State of Origin campaigns and large chunks of previous South Sydney seasons.
“We are awaiting scan results on South Sydney’s highest paid player.”
