"Smashed the ceiling": Inside 2006 damage to NRL trophy
The Broncos could be in hot water with the NRL amid reports they have damaged both of the trophies won by their men’s and women’s teams.
While both trophies have now been located, it seems that during the wild celebrations that followed the Broncos’ double premiership last weekend, they may have been misplaced and damaged.
According to News Corp the Provan-Summons trophy was found in the possession of Wayne Bennett’s daughter Kath who also had the NRLW gong which was a little worse for wear.
The story reminded Corey Parker of the demolition job the Provan did after he and his teammates won the title back in 2006.
“19 years ago, we were in the Broncos boardroom with the trophy having a nice time,” Parker said on SENQ Breakfast.
“Dane Carlaw, he’s grabbed it with one hand – it’s heavy – and he’s fist pumped it. He’s 6ft 4 and it’s jammed straight up into the ceiling, and the plaster boards come down around us.
“That hole stayed in the ceiling for years, every time you’d go the board room at the Broncos there was a gap in the ceiling.”
It’s not the first time the NRL trophy has been damaged while in the possession of the premiers.
In 2021 the Panthers were issued a please explain after images showed Norm Provan and Arthur Summons were no longer attached to the base of the trophy.
Nathan Cleary and Stephen Crichton were fined $7,000 and $4,000 respectively because of video footage showing them to have acted inappropriately with the trophy.
