SEN tennis expert Brett Phillips has made his selections for the men’s and women’s singles at the 2025 Australian Open.
In the men’s, Phillips is backing the 2024 winner and current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner to win it all despite a potential doping ban hanging over his head.
While Phillips is picking the Italian, he does think that No. 2 seed Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz also has a big hope of winning the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.
In the women’s draw though, Phillips doesn’t see Aryna Sabalenka being challenged too much in her quest for three straight Aus Open titles.
“I just can't go past the obvious,” Phillips told SEN Afternoons.
“The body of work and the evidence just tells me that it’s going to be him.
“The only thing with Sinner is he's handling this situation really well, whether you're positive or negative towards him.
“He seems to be sort of just quite focused on what he's doing, and he's the best player going around by far.
“This is the one that Alcaraz hasn't won, and he's never always come here in the best nick physically and with his form … and he wants to add this and get all four majors by the age of 21.
“In the women’s, it’s Sabalenka by the length of the Flemington straight right now, it’s going to be a brilliant tournament.”
The men’s and women’s singles finals at the 2025 Australian Open are set for Sunday, January 26 and Saturday, January 25 respectively.
