The NZ Breakers have confirmed associate head coach Judd Flavell will not return for the 2027/28 NBL season after accepting an international head coaching opportunity.
Flavell, who rejoined the Breakers for the 2025/26 campaign, has secured a head coaching contract overseas and will depart the club at the end of the current NBL season as he pursues his long-term ambitions in international coaching.
His exit comes just a fortnight after head coach Petteri Koponen's return to his native Finland.
The 13-season veteran is one of the most decorated figures in the Breakers’ history, having been part of four championship-winning campaigns during his time with the club.
He will continue in his role as head coach of the Tall Blacks.

Flavell said the decision came after careful consideration but ultimately aligned with his career goals.
"I was approached about an international head coaching opportunity during the season," he said.
"After thinking about my long-term aspirations, I felt it was something I couldn’t turn down.”
Flavell insists he remains proud of what the team achieved this season and believes the foundations have been laid for future success.
“The Breakers will always be part of who I am. I’ll continue to support the club and I’m confident the group is building towards reclaiming its place at the top of the NBL.”
Breakers president of basketball operations Dillon Boucher paid tribute to Flavell’s contribution, saying the club fully supported his move.
“Judd is a legend of New Zealand basketball and we’re proud to see him take the next step on the international stage,” Boucher said.
Flavell reaffirmed his commitment to the black singlet.
“I’m still very much committed and focussed on my role with the Tall Blacks," he said.
"I’ve never shied away from my love for this team, and I am extremely proud of what we’ve built over the past couple of years.”
