Best From The West: Hear from the trainers of key Northerly hopes Attrition, Super Smink and Storyville

The Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) takes place at Ascot on Saturday.
A very competitive field of 16 runners and two emergencies have been brought together for the $1.5 million Perth classic.
Storyville is currently the $4.50 favourite with Sportsbet ahead of Attrition ($4.50), Democracy Manifest ($6.50), Super Smink ($7) and Light Infantry Man ($10).
Read the thoughts from the trainers of some of the key hopes below:
Attrition - Mitch Freedman
“He’s a super horse, he’s been a ripping horse for our team. He’s really put the stable up in the spotlights,” Freedman said on SENTrack’s Best From The West.
“We decided to head west when the (Melbourne) spring carnival was slowly coming to a close. The Northerly was on the program, it’s worth plenty of money and just the right trip for him.
“He seems to race best on firm ground. Back to weight-for-age conditions we thought would suit. He gave a bit of weight away in the Five Diamonds (at Rosehill) last start, he’ll have to give a bit of weight away to the three-year-olds (in the Northerly), but he’ll get himself up in the first half of the field and see how we get on.
“He’s a horse that likes to get up there and be involved in the contest. He loves a fight and we’ll certainly be keeping that in mind when coming up with the final tactics.”
Super Smink - Dan Morton
“She’s had a faultless prep really,” Morton said.
“Tracked beautifully through to the Railway where we didn’t draw a great marble which was a bit costly, but she was still great (when running third). We get another opportunity on Saturday.
“She has a pattern of racing where she gets off them a bit and it seems to suit her.
“Chris (Parnham) rides her really well and he understands her, so I won’t be second-guessing whatever he’s got planned. He’ll go out with a good plan and hopefully execute that.”

Storyville - Grant Williams
“She’s come a long way,” Williams said.
“We liked her from the start and she’s had a few little hiccups along the way. She got everything sorted out and she’s in really good condition.
“She’s still pretty immature so it’s really good to see her doing what she’s doing. She’ll be a really nice horse in another 12 months I would have thought.
“She can be ridden more forward. We’ve just had to ride her that way. She can get some cover and be ridden a bit forward as well.”
