Have Australia finally found the opener they’ve been looking for?
Have Australia found the solution to their opening dilemma?
It looked that way during Day 2 in Brisbane with Jake Weatherald making his maiden Test fifty before falling to a brilliant Jofra Archer yorker on 72 from 78 balls.
The left-hander looked compact throughout his stay on the crease, with checked drives, brilliant cuts and an attacking mindset which immediately reminded many of an in-form David Warner.
While it’s just his third Test innings, and there’s no doubt the 31-year-old has a lot to do to become a long-term member of the side, the signs were there that the Tassie opener is up to the level.
Speaking after his best international knock yet, Weatherald thinks he could play Test cricket for a while if he continues doing the right things.
“I took a lot of confidence out of it, definitely,” Weatherald told SEN Cricket.
“It’s one of those things, you want to belong somewhere, and playing cricket, you’re always on your toes about your performance.
“If I can just consistently rock up and do the right things, then I think I could be here for a while.”
Weatherald was one of a handful of Aussie batters who got a real start before failing to go big on Day 2.
Even though he, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith all failed to convert fifties, Weatherald praised the batting group in getting the side to 6/378 at Stumps, with a lead of 44.
“Full credit to the batters,” Weatherald said.
“Even though they got out, they put a lot of pressure back on to get us to a position we’re in now ahead of another new ball,
“We’re now nearly 50 in front, which is great.”
Day 3 starts in Brisbane at 2pm local time and 3pm AEDT. Listen to every ball LIVE on SEN - your home of cricket.
