Ashes bolter keen to prove doubters wrong
Brendan Doggett is fully prepared for a potential Test debut this Friday.
The Queensland native and South Australia Shield quick is a strong chance to play for Australia against England in the first Ashes Test in Perth after injuries to captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott.
Doggett, 31, looks the most likely option to join Mitch Starc and Scott Boland in the XI and insists he is as prepared as he will ever be.
Many pundits have suggested that the Aussies might struggle at Optus Stadium without two of their very best fast bowlers, but Doggett is intent on proving the doubters wrong.
“That's going to be the goal if I do get the opportunity,” Doggett told Channel 9 when asked if he has a point to prove.
“We've got Scotty and Starcy still there, they've done well in the past so I think we'll be right.
“I am confident, if called upon I think I am ready to go.”
Doggett has performed well in Perth of late, taking 6/48 and 1/38 against Western Australia in October.
“I had a bit of success there a few weeks ago so if it's anything similar it'll be good,” he said.
“It's notoriously favoured fast bowlers in the past so I can't complain.”
Doggett has taken 13 wickets in two Shield matches this season.
Michael Neser was added to the squad after the Hazlewood and Abbott hamstring injuries to provide depth in the fast bowling stocks.
The first Test between Australia and England begins on November 21 at Optus Stadium. Catch every ball of the Ashes on the Sport Nation app via SEN.
