Alexander: Tigers must make decision on identity amid stadium row

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson has demanded an upgrade of Campbelltown Sports Stadium or else the joint venture will be forced to consider moving all home fixtures from the venue.
The Tigers released a statement on Wednesday in which the club asked for $100 million worth of funding over the next decade at the suburban ground as they feel the stadium is “not fit for purpose” and is not financially viable to host NRL and NRLW fixtures.
The Tigers play their home games at Campbelltown, Leichhardt Oval and CommBank Stadium and have their stadium of excellence based in Concord in Sydney’s inner west.
SEN’s Greg Alexander said it was time for the Tigers to make a decision about where they want the club to be permanently based.
“It’s a problem for the Tigers that they share home grounds,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“They haven’t got a home. They are here for three games and then they are there for four games.
“Do they just bite the bullet? Their $70 million centre of excellence is in Concord.
“Where are all their juniors? They come from South West Sydney. How many junior teams do you have in Balmain or in that area? Barely none.
“The inner city is dying in terms of rugby league teams. The future is the South west of Sydney.
“Do they just bite the bullet and relocate to Campbelltown? If that’s the case, then I can understand the funding and Richardson asking for money.”
SEN’s Andrew Voss had a differing view and believes there is no issue with the Tigers having two home grounds in opposite parts of Sydney.
Voss added that the Tigers should relocate permanently to CommBank Stadium and only have one or two matches a season at Campbelltown and Leichhardt to honour the South West Sydney and Inner West factions at the joint venture.
“The best stadium is Commbank,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“It tears my heart to say this because I love Leichhardt but it might just get one game and Campbelltown only gets one game.
“CommBank then becomes your home, your jungle or whatever you want to call it.”
The Tigers have three home games remaining at CommBank Stadium and Leichhardt Oval for the 2025 season.
Campbelltown will host two more home fixtures.
