Outgoing NZ Cricket CEO Scott Weenink is the second high profile sporting CEO to resign in the lead up to Christmas with Netball NZ’s Jennie Wyllie announcing her departure yesterday.
Weenink said in a statement: "After careful consideration, it has become clear that I hold a different view from several Member Associations, and the NZCPA, on the future priorities for NZC, including the long-term direction of the game and the best role for T20 cricket in New Zealand. Given these differences, I believe it is in the best interests of the organisation that new leadership takes NZC forward from here.”
The departing CEO's statement continued: "While I am saddened to leave after such a successful period, I do not wish to create ongoing instability by continuing without the support of some key stakeholders. I depart with pride in the excellent progress made by NZC during my time as CEO, and confidence in the people in NZC who will carry the game forward."
Sport Nation understands that mediation was held this week between the New Zealand Cricket board, and Weenink, with respected KC Maria Dew acting as the mediator, and was due for a second day today, before Weenink’s resignation.
Weenink has been on leave since December 5th until today, and will leave his role on January 30 next year.
Sources have emphasised that Weenink wasn’t placed on leave, nor was he at the time stood down, and took leave on his own accord at a time when sources claim his role was “untenable”.
It comes following claims of an ongoing breakdown in the relationship between Weenink and the NZC board and the Major Associations, which sources believe has “stemmed over a long period of time, not just since the NZ20 discussions began.”
It’s understood that last month, an investigator was asked to gather statements and information from the Major Associations around Weenink’s running of the game. It’s believed those findings were presented as part of the mediation.

Last month, Sport Nation reported that following considerable feedback from key stakeholders, moves were being made to determine whether concerns raised by the cricket community were substantiated and to assess Weenink’s role and future.
Multiple sources, who agreed to speak off the record under the condition of anonymity, told Sport Nation at the time that it came after a “continuous feeling that there’s a lack of faith and direction” from Weenink, having stated that that they feel “his position is untenable.”
One source claimed that “after looking at all options, it’s agreed he can’t continue.”
A third shared their concern that “if action isn’t taken now, this could be damaging for the game” given “how tense it all is.”
Sources have indicated that they believe it’s a move that’s been, as one put it, “a long time coming”.
At the time, NZC didn’t want to respond to the comments, saying “We won't respond to speculation from anonymous sources.”
In the statement, NZC Board Chair, Diana Puketapu-Lyndon says that “NZC acknowledges and thanks Scott for his positive contribution to New Zealand Cricket during his time as CEO, and wishes him well for the future.”
